BACHELORS AND MASTERS THESIS DESCRIPTION

Investigation of Differences in Language Use of Speakers with Different Verbal Intelligence (Master’s Thesis)
People with different verbal intelligence use different sentences and sentence structures. The complexity of sentences may be estimated using different approaches, for example, readability formulas. Most of them use surface-oriented indicators (the average sentence length or the average number of syllables per word). Some readability checkers analyze texts at syntactic and semantic levels. However, they are based on linear models, which are not always able to give a precise estimation of the text complexity. This thesis was divided into two steps. The first step was the training of non-linear models for the precise estimation of the complexity of texts. The models are trained on a corpus of 500 different texts and their readability judgments. The second step was the analysis of dependency between the text complexity and speakers’ verbal intelligence scores.
Vehicle Tracking System (Bachelors Final Year Project/Thesis)
The project contained two phases; the first phase was about tracking the vehicle through SMS’s and the second phase was about tracking the vehicle through GPRS. Vehicle tracking was accomplished by interfacing a GSM phone with a GPS device through a microcontroller.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES AT NOKIA ULM, GERMANY
A SIM card in a GSM phone was to be configured by a tool. For this purpose, NOKIA had an existing Java applet; this Applet (SIM Application Toolkit or SIM-ATK) was installed on a SIM. Job Description for this job was as follows:

  • Development of a PC tool (in TCL/TK) that sends commands (Proactive, GSM and self-defined) to the SIM-ATK.
  • Analysis of the existing system.
  • Research and Development based on 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and ETSI’s (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) existing documentation (3GPP TS 31.111, ETSI GSM 11.14 etc.)
  • Porting the existing SIM application to USIM (new Java Applet for USIM to be made).
  • Installation of this Java Applet on the USIM using GemXplore or ORGA SIM Card Manager o Testing of the new application.
  • Documentation of the work.
